This publication documents the everyday life of artisan Phạm Văn Thắng and his family, together with the quiet surroundings of Phù Lãng pottery village in the final months of 2024.
Through photographs taken directly in the village, the book offers a glimpse into daily routines, working spaces, and the relationship between an artisan family and a pottery tradition that has been sustained across generations in Kinh Bắc, a historic cultural region of northern Vietnam centred around Bắc Ninh and its surrounding areas. The region is known for its long-established craft villages and rich cultural traditions.
Phù Lãng is one of the long-established pottery villages of northern Vietnam, with a history spanning more than 700 years. Phù Lãng ceramics are known for their distinctive brown glazes, hand-forming techniques, and traditional firing methods. Today, pottery making remains part of everyday life for many families in the village, present in their homes, workshops, and kilns.
With an intimate and minimally staged approach, the publication serves both as a visual record of an artisan’s daily life and as a reference to one of Kinh Bắc’s long-standing craft traditions.
